Inés Peraza and Luis de Herrera: An untold relationship

The signatures of five of the Herrera brothers and that of the notary public (source: Archivo Municipal de Burgos, Municipal Collection, Compound Section, catalogue number C3-3-16-27, f. 4v).

We have the pleasure, honor and no small responsibility to open the History section of the new issue –the 70th– of the Anuario de Estudios Atlánticos, with a paper in which we present six unpublished documents on Inés Peraza, last holder of the Seigneury of the Canary Islands, and her brother-in-law Luis de Herrera, brother of the lord consort, Diego García de Herrera. In these handwritten documents, among other data and matters of historiographic interest, there are new clues suggesting that the devolution of the Tower of Gando, from the hands of the Portuguese captain Diogo da Silva de Meneses to the seigneurial couple, probably took place at the end of 1474.

Let our first contribution be a small token of gratitude and recognition to this veteran and reputable scientific publication, and to all the researchers who have contributed and continue to contribute their knowledge to it, for all the invaluable wealth of information that they so generously make available to the public, and that has served us throughout these almost eight years of PROYECTO TARHA to better understand the history of our Islands, and, consequently, to enrich the writing of our posts and articles.
